I leave for Tanzania on July 6th, that's less than 2 weeks away! I just got back from a 2 day meeting where I met my tent mates and learned how to use the video camera and edit video so I can make my documentary when I return.
Here's my basic itinerary: First I fly from Detroit to Washington D.C.
From D.C., I fly to the airport in Ethiopia, and then on a smaller plane from Ethiopia to Tanzania.
It will take several days to reach our destination; the Gombe Stream Chimapanzee Research Preserve. Half the group will go to Gombe and the other half will visit African schools in that area. Then we will switch groups. I think I may be in the first group; we'll find out.
I can't wait to see the chimps. I studied them in high school, but they were chimps in capitivity, these are wild chimpanzees. I have been reading about Jane Goodall. She was so good at watching the chimps because she sat quietly for a very long time and wrote down everything she saw, heard and smelled.
After Gombe, we travel to the Serengeti to go on safari, then Ngorongoro Crater (which used to be a volcano; now it's dormant, or "sleeping."), and then more safari at Tarangiri National Park.
Finally, on July 16th, we start walking up Mount Kilimanjaro. It will take us 6 days and we will hike 48 miles.
We will spend our last day at St Timothy's School, where we sent our letters. I will be teaching a science lesson on sound while I am there.
Here is a video of sound waves. We're hoping that they might be able to show this: http://games.yahoo.com/blogs/plugged-in/watch-sand-magically-dance-impressive-video-illusion-220755605.html

Have you gone to the Serengeti website yet? My daughters and I have spent hours watching and identifying animals there. It's helping me learn to recog
